What is Glutathione?

Glutathione (GSH) is a naturally occurring molecule of three amino acids, L-cysteine, glycine, and L-glutamate. GSH may help prevent heart disease and support overall heart health. GSH has also been linked to reduced oxidative stress, improving brain health, and reducing symptoms like brain fog and headaches. Some research also indicated that GSH might improve cell turnover, leading to healthier, clearer-looking skin.

What are the benefits of glutathione therapy?

Glutathione has many potential health benefits, from improving nerve function, reducing brain fog, and improving skin’s natural glow to reducing oxidative stress. Studies suggest that having optimal levels of GSH in the bloodstream is critical to recovery from and prevention of certain types of cancer. While research is ongoing, the data is promising.

Reducing Oxidative Stress

Oxidative stress is caused by an imbalance of free radicals and the body’s natural defense against them, anti-oxidants. GSH infusions help reduce oxidative stress by providing the body with a burst of additional anti-oxidants.

This reduction in oxidative stress may help reduce your chances of developing conditions like diabetes, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Furthermore, oxidative stress has been shown to be a cause of premature skin aging and damage. Improving the glutathione levels in your system could go a long way to making your skin look healthier and slowing the signs of aging.

It improves mitochondrial fat burning.

Recent animal studies show that healthy glutathione levels help boost mitochondrial fat burning, aka your metabolic rate. As we age, our metabolic rates slow down. Increasing the glutathione levels was found to improve the body’s ability to burn stored fat.

Other potential benefits:

  • Glutathione is a natural detoxifier. It has been shown to aid in the removal of heavy metals and to reduce cell damage in the liver-related to fatty liver and alcohol-induced damage.
  • Glutathione may support healthy cells and optimizes immune function. Glutathione could aid in skin cell turnover, which leads to a brighter, healthier skin glow.
  • Glutathione may be useful in any condition where oxidative stress is a key factor in disease progression.

How does glutathione therapy work?

Glutathione infusions are delivered via an IV infusion, similar to how an IV vitamin infusion is administered. Patients undergoing GSH therapy will be given the IV in one of Revitalist’s calming, therapeutic treatment centers, supervised by a licensed CRNA or other medical provider.

IV infusions typically start at 600mg to 1.2mg. Dosages can gradually be increased based on client needs and conditions. Glutathione should not be given with IV vitamin C. For maximum benefit, run glutathione separately from infusions containing IV vitamin C.

Potential side effects:

Glutathione is generally well tolerated by most adults. Some clients may experience GI upset (cramping, bloating, and nausea). This is common with the detoxification process. Long-term use of glutathione can lead to decreased zinc levels.

Contraindications:

Glutathione is not recommended in patients with cancer. Research is conflicting on this topic. However, the understanding is that glutathione allows for cells to be healthier. This would include cancer cells. IV glutathione safety has not been evaluated in pregnant or breastfeeding mothers.
